We are fortunate to have Ruby Sinreich - Co-Director of Communications, Fellowship of Reconciliation be the featured presenter at our first meeting (see summary below). The aim will also be to get to know each other and collaboratively evolve the format and future agenda to suit our collective goals.
Cheers,
The Organizing Committee

Don't Push the River, It Flows by Itself

Many nonprofit leaders worry that the demands of keeping up with the latest online tricks and tools will detract from the important work of advancing their mission. However, utilizing the right tools in the right situations can serve to support your existing work, and sometimes even save time too. We don't all have to be experts on the latest internet trends; but a small investment in understanding can give you the capacity to effectively take advantage of online tools, and know when and how it makes sense to apply them. In this session, we will look at some examples from progressive advocacy organizations; and discuss the big picture of how "Web 2.0" tools and ideas change communication for today's nonprofit.

Takeaways:

1. A better understanding of networked communication, a.k.a. social media, Web 2.0, social networking, online grassroots, etc.
2. Examples of how networked communication is impacting the work of nonprofit organizations
3. Strategic framework for network-based approach to outreach and advocacy

I want to again thank Ruby for a great presentation and everyone for attending and being so engaged. I hope you all got as much out of the meeting as I did - not just from the presentation from each other. To revisit the material she presented and to contact her, visit ruby at lotusmedia.org/5things. Here is the high level outline... Five aspects of effective networks 1. Strong social ties 2. Dense communication grid 3. Common story 4. Culture of sharing 5. Network awareness

Ruby gave a similar presentation at the NTEN conference in New Orleans in March and it was great!

Who attended?

    •  Great presentation by Ruby and lots of good conversation.
    •  I learned alot which I appreciate even if everything was not relevent to my particular nonprofit. It was good to see what other people do. I got quite a few ideas that I think will go a long way in addressing some problems my group has.
    •  I think the first meeting went very well with a few minor snags - ie. speaker getting blow out on the way ;-). Ruby gave an awesome presentation and the group was very engaged and had some good discussion. We went pretty late, but that was obviously a testament to the Ruby and everyone's interest level in the topic (not just that we started a bit late).
    •  Interesting group of people. Good discussion.
    •  I thought the speaker was great. Everyone seemed friendly. I think it will be interesting to get to know learn from people there. Only regret is that I had to leave early - the meeting was very long!
