Does your organization have great stories to tell--but lack the skills required to plan and produce compelling videos to post online?

This month’s Toronto Net Tuesday is all about using video to communicate your stories to the world. We have 3 experts with different backgrounds, sharing their tips and tools on the best way to tell your stories online using video.

Participants of this interactive workshop will have the opportunity to see what works and what doesn’t. They will also have the opportunity to network with a diverse group of people, as well as have access to our panel of experts.

Speakers:
Jaime Woo -- Why online storytelling and videos?
Brad Dworkin -- What should your online story and video include?
TBA-- How to produce your online story and video?

About the speakers:

Jaime Woo: believes life is the sum of one's experiences. His career has centered on telling stories, whether in biotechnology discussing the molecular interactions within the body, in journalism chronicling the important issues in the city, or now in strategic communications helping small businesses and nonprofits hone and share their key messaging. Jaime created written and visual communications for the SpinTO fundraiser benefiting the Friends For Life Bike Rally and Toronto People With AIDS Foundation and is currently working with Pride Toronto and the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives to foster community with their stories.

Brad Dworkin:Brad Dworkin is an award-winning filmmaker and new media artist with extensive experience shooting for web and new media platforms. A director, cinematographer, composer and editor, Brad has had involvement in all aspects of the cinematic process. Brad holds a Fine Arts degree in Film from Ryerson University and currently works at the Canadian Film Centre as a Festival Technical Liaison and as the Director of Multimedia for The Palmerston Group.

I'm sorry I missed this workshop. I hope another one is planned in the very, very near future!

For those of you who couldn't attend, I made a post of the session on my website. I included the links to resources that were on the flip chart but one of them didn't work. If anyone has the link to the site where you can download release forms, I would appreciate receiving it. Here is the link to my post. http://socialmediatools.ca Can anyone tell me why my feedback comments don't appear in the column to the right? Just wondering if I did something in error. Thanks Brent

I liked the range of presenters with their different focuses. Billy Mintz was the most engaging, inspiring and practical presenter for where I am with this work. The warm up didn't work and took up valuable time. The wait at the registration table could have been avoided and thankfully I was at the front and had room to breath. I think 2 presenters would suffice, leaving more room for small group work and questions.

    •  It was a great workshop; very educational, informative and "up lifting". The timing was good (after hours) and the location was accessible.
    •  I felt it could have used a bit more organization. And hoenstly, I didn't think the exercise in the beginning was worth the time. The workshop started late which is difficult for folks who have kids they need to get home to.
    •  First, don't serve peanuts, I was next to someone from Anaphylaxis Canada, not cool. Second, there was great confusion at the beginning with chairs being set up, drinks not ready and registration confined to a small space which made everyone jammed into the entrance - prior setup and better registration could be easily done. Third, please start on time, we were about 20 minutes late in starting. And if there is no AC, please have fans, 50-60 people in that room gets hot. Sound was an issue in videos. First presenter, Jamie Woo was interesting and had good basics. Third presenter, Billy Mintz was incredibly informative and a great presenter. Middle guy Brad was completely forgettable and really, LOLcats? Not funny in the least. For a first meetup on this, I thought it went well but improvements can be made. Thanks for the experience!

The production sharing was very good and different perspectives. There was no on line portion how to post etc.
    •  This meeting addressed a growing and important trend. It was interesting to hear how much the cost of equipment has continued to fall (thus contributing to the accessibility and growth of the trend).
    •  I felt like the workshop was really production-focused - it was really grounded in how to make videos in a practical sense (audio equipment, editing, etc), which was less helpful for me because I know a little bit about production. What I would like to learn more about is the storytelling itself: how to develop a good story in a 2-5 minute video, pacing, emotional impact, communicating your idea well, etc. I think the production focus was helpful for the rest of the crowd though - people seemed to get a lot out of it, and the speakers were great. It was just a bit different from what I was looking for, which was more about crafting a story.
    •  Thank you for the time and energy that went into organizing and presenting this event! I wish I could have stayed to the end.
